Hunting jackets are usually the most expensive piece of hunting clothing a hunter will purchase. This is due to more than a few factors.
Firstly, the jackets must provide the hunter with enough protection from the cold, wind, and water so that he or she can have a safe and pleasurable hunting experience. New and innovative materials have made jackets warmer, dryer, and even lighter than they have been in the past. You’ll find that a new camo jacket will be much thinner than some of the hunting jackets from a couple decades ago.
When searching for a hunting coat, one should first and foremost think about the temperatures they will hunting in. If you find you are only hunting in mild climates, you may only need something to block the wind and rain. In this case, you’ll probably be able to save some money by purchasing something with less substance to it. Just make sure it is adequate protection against a heavy rain and you shouldn’t have any problems.
Under Armour, Columbia, and Gore Tex all make a wide array of hunting coats to choose from. Gore Tex even provides the U.S. Military with specialized clothing.
Next, you’ll want to make sure it has the appropriate camouflage pattern on it. Wetland patterns are a poor choice for the woodlands and woodland patterns are a poor choice for the wetlands. Your hunting jackets need to match your surroundings, otherwise they really aren’t hunting jackets at all.
Buying Hunting Jackets
When you buy a new hunting jacket, make sure you realize that it will not be your only form of camouflage. The hunting apparel you wear underneath of your hunting coat should also be properly camouflaged. This way if the weather changes and you no longer need your jacket, you can take it off and not have to worry about losing your camo.
Also, always keep in mind that you will need to be able to maneuver around in your hunting jackets. If you buy a jacket that is very warm but also very bulky, you may find that you are missing shots simply because you cannot move fast enough.
Some things to look for when searching through hunting jackets are: proper camo, warmth, exterior pockets, thickness, and sleeve openings. You can find hunting coats that offer drawstring sleeves and hoods to provide you with extra warmth.
As always, keep your new jacket away from scents that may be easily detected by your intended prey.
